The Livi Talbot series by Skyla Dawn Cameron
I can’t say enough good things about the Livi Talbot urban fantasy series. Livi lives in a post-Pulse world where magical artifacts and abilities have been reawakened. Determined to provide for her daughter, she does what any single mother of her caliber would: becomes a treasure hunter.
Livi is a hell of a lot of fun to tag along with, and each book in the series is practically like getting to travel to a different part of the world without leaving your house. I get completely immersed in the settings and action, and can’t get enough of the banter between Livi and her slow-burn love interest West.
Also, *fans self*, West. If he gets any hotter I will either die or my husband may divorce me for cheating on him with a fictional character. Solomon’s Seal is first in the series. If you read the books and love West, I highly recommend Skyla’s Patreon, which is the only place you can get access to the West prequel novel Tiger’s Memory. It is exceptionally spoiler-filled and totally worth it.
The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews
I absolutely love everything the amazing husband/wife duo that is Ilona Andrews have ever published. In fact, every time I read one of their books I am filled with the certainty that I should never write again because everything they do is so wondrous I could never compare. But I digress.
Magic Bites is the first book in their Kate Daniels urban fantasy series, and the books should be read in order of publication. Kate lives in a world where magic and technology take turns working in unpredictable “shifts.” When a magic wave hits, technology stops working, and vice-versa.
Kate is an absolute powerhouse, and I love the dynamic between her and lion-shifter Curran, a.k.a the Beast Lord of the Atlanta Pack. Complete at ten books, the series never loses steam like some other lengthy series I’ve read. Each book introduces a completely gripping narrative arc that is concluded for that book, while adding a link in the overall series arc. I’ve read it through three times and it will always have a place on my bookshelf.
Ordinary Magic series by Devon Monk
I want to live in Ordinary, Oregon so much it physically hurts. The place where gods vacation, laying down their powers for a chance to experience life like mortals, Ordinary is never, well, ordinary. Delaney Reed is the law in this little town, and also the bridge through which the gods give up their powers.
Keeping the law in a town full of gods is no easy task, nor is dealing with one’s recently-returned-to-town high school crush, but Delaney has to do both.
Small town life! A rhubarb festival! Hot, oh-so-hot, returned crushes! Fair warning, the end of the first book, Death and Relaxtion, is a bit of a heart-wrencher, but I promise everything works out all right in the end.
The Dante Valentine series by Lilith Saintcrow
Perfect if you like your urban fantasy with more than a splash of grim and dark, a whole lot of fantastic world-building, and a fun new exploration of the working relationship between Earth and Hell. Oh, and necromancy, of course. Who doesn’t love raising the dead and asking them questions?
Female necromancer! Swords! Magic! Forbidden love with a fallen demon!
The Dante Valentine books have the honor of being the very first urban fantasy series I ever read. I plucked it off a Barnes and Noble shelf in my first year of college, and I’ve read every single one of Lilith Saintcrow’s books since. Working for the Devil is first in the series.
