FAQs

Are you going to undo that thing you did in the middle of the Nyx series that we wrote you hatemail over and told you that you were a terrible human being for doing?

No.

When is A Song to End the World coming out?

As soon as I can get my recalcitrant brain to write it. I promise I am working on it. I love it, I love the characters. The last couple years have been a lot for me, and I don’t want to rush the book and deliver something I don’t love.

Do you use LLMs/Generative AI?

Hell no.

I believe art is human. I write because I like to explore that. I write because I love writing. I would rather be stuck on a book for three years than use generative AI which, in addition to removing everything I love about writing, is a tool built off stolen labor and is currently accelerating climate change at a rapid pace.

I hire humans to design my covers. Most of my covers are made by Skyla Dawn Cameron, who hates AI as much as I do. She is the designer of the Aspect Society covers and the Song Duology covers. She creates covers out of purchased stock images and digital painting. While it’s possible a stock image not labeled as AI could sneak through, we do everything we can to detect and avoid them, and if one were to make it onto a cover and later be discovered, it would immediately be removed. My Nyx Fortuna covers are made by Damonza, who has recently moved to allow “up to 10%” of a cover to be AI. THEY CURRENTLY ALLOW CUSTOMERS TO OPT OUT OF THIS 10% AI USE, AND I HAVE OPTED OUT. I still don’t like their stance. Because I am seven books deep in the Nyx series, I can’t afford to bail on this designer since they do allow me to opt out of AI. However, once the Nyx series is finished, I will never hire them again.

My editors are human. I don’t use any of the grammar/editing programs beyond the basic spellcheck included in most writing software.

I don’t currently have any artwork for my series, but I am hoping to commission some in the future. If/when I do, it will be from human artists committed to not using AI.

Do I really have to sign up for your newsletter to read the bonus content for your books?

Yes. I will literally only email you when I have a new preorder up, new book out, and/or new bonus content. I do not think I have ever sent more than four emails in a year. If you sign up and decide my quarterly presence in your inbox is too much, you may of course unsubscribe at any time.

Will there be more Aspect Society books?

Short answer: maybe. I have ideas for other books set in that world, with different characters, but they haven’t blossomed into full-fledged book ideas. So it could happen someday, but not at the moment.

Authors I Recommend

I’ve long debated whether I should have a recommends section on here, but the truth is I found most of the authors I love from them being recommended by other authors I’d read, so I’m going to pop this here. All links lead to the author’s website, with the exception of Nikita Gill. She did not have an independent website I could find, so I’ve linked her name to her listing on fantasticfiction.com (which is one of my favorite resources for looking up series order).

I will NEVER recommend an author who uses AI in any capacity. Writing is art and humanity, and there is no art or humanity in AI. If I’ve put them on this list, I’m confident they’ll never sell out.

Without further ado, here we go:

Skyla Dawn Cameron

Krista D. Ball

Lilith Saintcrow

Stephen Blackmoore

Ann Aguirre

Michelle Sagara

Devon Monk

Ilona Andrews

Nikita Gill

Stephanie Burgis
